Genes
By Stewart, Cody, Jaylah and Jaycee

Genes are much different than jeans, (blue pants). Genes are genetic personalities. Some people may say you look like your mother, or father, or even big sister or brother. Example: “you have your fathers hair.” You appear to have inherited genes from your father. That’s because you have most of the same genes as them.  People of any size or age or gender have the same genes as their parents, and grandparents.  In each human cell, there are about 25000 to 35000 genes.  The genes of your body cover about 99.9% of your body. Genes are a part of your DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid). About 20000 genes are around 6 feet when straightened out. They are all crumpled together, so in your body it’s about a centimetre big.  There are different parts of the DNA. They are known as ATCG. (adeninethyminecytosineguanine).
That is what genes are, thanks for listening!!!

What is a Luge?
By Zach, Andrew, Keeshan

A luge is a type sport that you can play in the Olympics.  A luge is a type of sleigh with sharp skates that you race down on.  You race around on a tilted ice rink and whoever gets the fastest speed at the end of the race wins.  The luge is only done in the Winter Olympics.  It was brought into the Olympics in the year 1964.
A luge is a heavy sled that that people ride on their stomach feet first.  Luge is a French word for a sleigh.  It is for both girls and boys and for all different age divisions.  The luge is the fastest sport and can reach speeds up to 90mph.   A luge can have up to two people riding at once.
What is Lightning?

Alisha, Abi, Hunter, Cameron, Dora
Lightning is the occurrence of the natural electrical discharge. Lightning is between the cloud and the ground or within the cloud. It is usually accompanied by thunder. Lighting is a massive electric discharge. Water and ice move around inside the cloud forced up by warm air currents. It is down by gravity and compressed in the cloud. Rubbing a balloon can create static electricity. The particles in the cloud become charged, but charges separate in the cloud. Positive charges move up and Negative charges go down. Lighting kills and injures people each year more than tornados or hurricanes. Frozen bits of ice bump into each other as they move around in the air.  All the collisions create electrical charge.  Have you ever rubbed your feet against a carpet than touch a metal door handle? If so, you know you get shocked, lightning works the same way. Lighting is one of natural weather phenomena, and also one of the most dangerous. A lightning bolt can contain as many as a billion volts of electricity making every flash a potential killer. Lightning strikes earth more than 8 million times a day! It can strike the clouds and air, but the ground causes the most damage. Lightning bolts charge by positive and negative charges. Lightning is one of the most beautiful displays in nature with bolt temperatures hotter than the surface of the sun.

What is a Trojan Horse?
By Aiden, Mia, Aaliyah and Caoimhe
There are two types of Trojan horses the first one is a Computer virus and the second is a fake horse that they hide in for the war. It’s the Greeks entrance into Troy during the Trojan war. They got into it from the stomach. The solders would hide in the horse. The Trojans wheeled the tribute into the walled city. At night the Greeks came out and captured the city, ending the war.
A Trojan Horse is also a virus that is designed to enable hackers to remotely control your computer. It wrecks the computer system. Trojans may arrive when you download things or you can get it on websites. A Trojan Horse virus can be an email virus.

What is the biggest threat to our oceans?

By Dora, Cameron and Hunter
We have many reasons for threats to our oceans. They are climate change, overfishing, pollution, habitat loss, and oil spills into oceans.
Climate change would have to be the biggest threat to our oceans. The climate change increases the surface top and sea level rise with Carbon Dioxide. There are death zones in the sea where the sea animals don’t go because there is no food and there is a lot of carbon dioxide. That makes it unsafe for them to go, because they could die.
The overfishing is also a problem, because there are now less fish in the sea, which means some animals don’t have food. But we still need to fish a bit because than we won’t have fish to eat. That disrupts our ecosystem, which is taking the food away.
Pollution is also a big problem because people are dropping their water bottles, wrappers and there garbage into the ocean. It could give very bad harm to the sea animals, from sharp edges and less space to live. That causes habitat loss. Habitat loss is very bad because now the sea animals don’t have anywhere to go.
Then the sea gets polluted with bad oxygen because of oil spills into the ocean.
Our solution is to stop littering which causes lots of problems to go away. It makes pollution go away because now we’re not littering. This is giving them space for their habitat, which is solving habitat loss. Hopefully it can also solve oil spills.  Unfortunately, we don’t think we can solve climate change. Climate change is natural, so we can’t really solve it.

How can two people from the same family be so different?
By Abi, Mia, Zach and Andrew

We’re all different in our personalities. One of life’s challenges is learning to get along with people who are different from us. But have you ever thought how dull life would be if everybody was exactly alike. Even though you were born with the same genes and you were raised the same way your personalities can be very different.  Half of the genetics are from the egg and half of the genetics is from the man and the sperm.
When two people from different families get married they usually look different because they were not related before so it’s sometimes the same as the kids or it can also be mixed from both mom and dad.
If a woman has blue eyes then has a kid with a man with brown eyes the kid will probably have brown eyes however if they have another kid they could have blue eyes.

How do we get “Goosebumps”
Olivia, Aidan, Rheya, Jaycee

Goose bumps have many names like, goose flesh is a name that has been around since 1810, goose pimples, is another name, and the scientific term for goose bumps, is cutis Anserina.
The body hair on humans stands up when cold or scared and creates a thin layer of hair and when the hair stands up, the skin that’s attached is lifted to create goose bumps.
Goose bumps are only temporary and are NOT a reaction to something you are allergic to.
Spooked millions of years ago, being puffed up kept our ancestors warm and made them look bigger, which turned out to be a good way to frighten predators.

What Makes Tape Sticky
By Stewart, Katelynne, Denyce

The reason tape is so sticky is that the sticky side of it has a product called “adhesive.”
It turns out that with a powerful microscope you can see tiny little lines with adhesive.
Adhesive is able to stick fast to a surface or object and adhesive is also sticky because it has soda (chemical), and caramel (topping) that makes it sticky.
Tape is also sticky because there are tiny air bubbles that hold the chemicals and it also has some sticky fur on the bottom of it.
Adhesive is kind of like glue but adhesive is already in its sticky state when you pull it from the roll of tape.
There are many layers in adhesive tape. These are the release coating, the primer, and the adhesive layer.

Homeless
Abigail, Andrew, Mia, Aiden

It’s hard to imagine how someone can go from having a home one day to being out on the street the next. None of us have had an experience with that kind of thing. The definition of homelessness is a person without a home or someone living on the street.

Definition
A person without a home or someone living on a street
Causes of homelessness
-          Complex and multiple
-          No one chooses to be homeless
-          It can happen to anyone
-          Parents could lose their job then don’t have enough  money to pay rent or tax
-          Being homeless is not easy
-          Poverty
-
Problems with homeless people
-all over the world thousands of people living on streets

What is homelessness?
-a man on the street begging for money or a woman on the side of the rode holding up a piece ofd cardboard saying “homeless will work for food” a family sleeping in their car on or a tiny tent underneath a bridge all these images represent homelessness.
- over half of the people that are homeless have mental health issues
Only 20 percent of homeless people are in the age of 16-24 years.

 Solution
-          Shelter houses provide short term relief to those in need of shelter , food, clothing, and much more
-
How do the homeless people survive winter
-they sleep in doorways to buildings
- Public washrooms
- Coffee shops

Homelessness

Definition: The definition of Homelessness is having no home and living in the street, or in the forests.
Causes: Running away some causes for homelessness women are physical or mental health problems, escaping a violent/very bad relationship, escaping a place or running away from home. The causes for men are escaping from prism, health care, a hospital or any other place, leaving a relationship, running away, and mental or physical health issues. For children, they either have to go with their parents because they are poor, or they can also run away from home. Some causes for everyone is they can be truly poor, or get so stressed that they do drugs and run away also.
Problems with: A large problem in the USA, Downtown Toronto and many other places are from the cold and the heat. When there to cold, and they live in the streets, they sometimes don’t have coats or blankets. They could go into a sheltered bus or shelter, but they would have to leave in the morning. Another problem is running away from home. Some are adopted but don’t like their parents, which is another reason of running away from home. They also might have a disability with their brain. Some problems when you are homeless are having no food, a good home, and a place to sleep. Some bad people could go and stalk people, to kill or kidnap, or even follow where they go to. Some people even have to live in a box. They sometimes have to because it gets so cold outside. Some also have to live on a curb, in doorways of shops, and even bushes. Their clothes get ripped, and dirty, and don’t have any other clothes to live in. Some people have to go into different shelters, but kick them out in the morning because they think there lazy, sick, and think there bad people. Lots of people treat homelessness people with disrespect. But it’s not like they signed up to be homeless. They don’t have a brush, a toothbrush or toothpaste. They also can’t bathe so often.
Solution: Our opinion is there are shelters that only let them stay for 1 day. The people, who run the shelter, should teach them so they can get a job, and let them stay in the shelter until they have enough money to buy a house, for food, and furniture. So they can retire when they are old enough, and then have a good life.
The internet’s solution: All homelessness people have a lack of housing. But we can decrease the number of homelessness people. What they need is a job, house, food and things to survive. You can volunteer to help them at a shelter, so they can get enough money, help the homelessness people!
