Body Systems Research

Nervous System
Matthew H.  Josh, Braydon, Lindsay

The brain and spinal cord are in the nervous system. The brain and spinal cord are the center of the nervous. The left side of your brain controls the right side of your body. The majority of the nervous system is tissue made up of two classes of cells: neurons and neuroglia. The brain is soft and is about 3 pounds. Nerves are bundles of axons in the peripheral nervous system. The spinal cord is a long thin mass of bundled neurons that carries information. The nervous system has 3 main functions: sensory, integration, and motor. The spinal cord is gray.  There is two parts of the nervous system. The neurons or nerve cell is the basic functional unit of the nervous system.     If we did not have a nervous system we could not move
Cardiovascular System
Jenson, Mason Emma

It transports blood nutrients gases and hormones. During an average lifespan, the heart beats 3,000,000,000 times. The heart contracts tirelessly more than 2.5 billion times. There are four parts of the epidermis they are epidermis, dermis, fatty tissue, and muscle. There are two intestines the large intestines and small intestines. The heart has many arties and veins. It takes a blood cell just 60 seconds to circulate through your body while at rest. The intestines are 1.5 m. There are over 2 million red blood cells in the body. The average adult human brain has up about 100 billion cells. The heart is about the size of a closed fist. There are about 160,000,000,000 cells in a brain. The lungs can hold up to 3 to 5 litres of air.  The cardiovascular system is an organ system comprised of the heart, blood and blood vessel. Without human blood the human body would stop working.           There are about 4.7 to 6.1 million blood cells in the heart.  There are about 5 million red Blood cells per ml of blood.

The Digestive System

Grace Jumah Kiera James

The food travels through the small intestine and the large intestine. The body gets rid of unnecessary things. Body uses food the Acid breaks down the food made to break food down so it’s easier to get rid of. It takes about 7 sec to get from the esophagus to the stomach. The adult stomach can only 1.5 liters of food when full. The large intestine is approximately 1.5m.The digestive system is made up of multiple organs .The food has to travel through a bunch of windy tube .The saliva softer so it’s easier to chew.
The parts it has to travel through are
Stomach
Small intestine
Large intestine
Appendix( branch that is attached to the large intestine)
Epiglottis (ufala)
Esophagus (throat
Anus (butt)

Endocrine System
By Jorja and Matthew.P Tye and  Tyler

Endocrine is an important body part. Endocrine glands release than 20 major hormones directly into the blood stream. The endocrine system includes all of the glands of the body and the hormones product by those glands. produce an incorrect amount of hormones. Together with the nervous system and the immune the endocrine system helps the body to cope with different events and stresses. The foundations of the endocrine system are the hormones and glands. As the bodies chemical messenger hormones transfer information and instructions from one set of cells to another. Although many different hormones and circulate through the bloodstream, each one effects only the cells that are genetically programs to receive and respond to its message. Hormone levels can be influenced by factors such as stress, infection, and changes in the balance of fluid and minerals in blood.

The Skeletal System
Emily, Ben, Cody, Moody
The skeletal system includes all of the bones and joints in your body. Each bone is a complex living organ that is made up of many cells, protein, fibers and minerals. Skeleton acts like a scaffold by providing support and protection for soft tissues that make up the rest of the body. New blood cells are produced by the red bone marrow inside our bones. The skeletal system provides attachment points for muscles allowing movements at the joints. The bones in our body act as the body’s warehouse for calcium, iron and energy in form of fat. Skeletons grow throughout your childhood and provides framework for the rest of your body to grow along. The skeletal system in an adult’s body is made up of 80 bones in the following regions: skull, hyoid, auditory ossicles, ribs, sternum and vertebral column. Bones protect your organs and let you move in many ways. The bones in your body give your body structure. Adult skeletons 206 bones in total. The bones in museums are dry, hard and crumbly. The bones in your body are very much alive. Almost every single bone in your body is made up of the same material. The  outer part of your body is called periosteal.

Muscular System
Anya , Keely  ,Peyton ,Tyson ,Harper

There are more than 600 muscles in your body. They do everything from pumping blood to helping you lift your heavy backpack. You control some of your muscles while others like your heart do their jobs without you. Muscles are all made of the same materials a type of elastic tissue sort of like the materials in a rubber band. Thousands or even tens of thousands of small fibers make up each muscle. You have three different types of muscles in your body: smooth muscles, cardiac muscles and skeletal muscles. Your brain and body tell your muscles what to do without you even thinking about it. Smooth muscles are at work all over your body even in your bladder and it also allows you to hold in your urine (pee). Did you know your heart is a muscle? Your heart is the most active muscle in your body. Your heart is like a pump or two pumps in one. Your heart is the size of your fist. There are muscles in your arms, legs, back and your behind. You will find smooth muscles behind your eyes too. These muscles keep your eyes focused. These are the types of skeletal muscles found in your body deltoid, pectorals, biceps, rectus, tendons, and quadriceps.

Respiratory System.
Alison,Marlene,Anastasia ,Heaven.

Your body could not breathe without the Respiratory system. The Respiratory system is made up of the Trachea the lungs and the diaphragm. When you breath in air you bring oxygen into your lungs and blow out carbon dioxide, and also when you inhale your lungs inflate. The tiny air sacs in your lungs are called Alveoli. Also there are tiny hairs in your lungs that keep dirt out they are called cilia. The voice box is known as the larynx. From your lungs blood returns back into your heart where it is pumped out to the rest of your body, carrying oxygen with it

HOW DO THEY KEEP ICE COLD AT AN ARENA?
The cooling system combined with daily treatment and hourly Zamboni rides keeps the ice cold and safe even if it's sunny with temperatures hovering at 60 degrees. Below the ice there is a network of pipes filled with a refrigerant chemical. This keeps the ice cold. The ice is cold because the temperature is below -20 degrees in the pipes.

How Were Airplanes Invented
The inventors of the first airplane were Orville and Wilbur Wright. On December 17 the Wright Brothers made the first successful plane. The Wright’s used their proven biplane configuration. A key to the flyers success was its 3 axis control system. The Wrights refined the wings by covering the bottom surfaces with fabric. The ribs of 1903 were built from ash. A simple motor was used. The controls on the Wright flyer were the same as those on the 1902 glider. In December 1903 the Wright Brothers made history.

Who is Houdini? How did he die?

-         -plai is Thai for male elephant with tusks. Chang is elephant in Thai. 7% of Thai elephants have tusks. Thai female elephants don’t have tusks; some have tushes which are large incisor teeth. Elephants are the largest land mammals in world.  Of all land animals elephants have largest brains. African female and male elephants both have tusks. African elephant tusks reach up to 3m (10 ft) in length. Tusks are enlarged incisor teeth made of ivory. Ivory is a hard white material derived from tusks and teeth of animals

Why Is Grass Green

    What Does Your Appendix Do?
Grace Alison Emily Heaven
The appendix is the structure of the colon. It is attached to the large intestine. The appendix is a little pouch.it is at the place where the small and large intestines meet. You will die if your appendix ruptures. Appendix is only about 3 or 4 inches long. The appendix plays the role in fighting lymphoid cells. It fights in the immune system. The appendix is a finger shaped pouch. If your appendix swells up its called appendicitis. Your appendix produces and protects good germs for the gut.

How Does a Combination Lock Work?

By Emma and Mason
Most combination locks use a wheel to know the combination.
All wheel packs are designed around the same principle.
Each wheel has a wheel fly on each side.
The fence is a small metal bar attached to a lever.
Each wheel on the spindle has a notch cut into it.
When you turn the dial, the spindle turns the drive cam

Why Do Onions Make You Cry?

by: Tyson Anastasia and Jorja

When you cut an onion, you break cells releasing their contents.
The gas that is formed reacts with water in your tears to form sulfuric acid.

The sulfuric acid burns making your eyes release more tears to wash the irritant away.
Cutting an onion under water washes away the sulfuric acid allow you to be tear free.

why do planes fly

By Braydon, Jenson, Ben and Joshua
A jumbo jet can weigh up to 390 metrical tonnes. A plane can hold up to 400 people on average. Planes can fly over 7000 nautical miles. Jumbo jets require a run up of over 3km.
When a plane takes off the wings cut the airflow in half. Some air travels above the wings and some air travels on the bottom. This keeps the plane up once it is in the air.

Why Do We Need Water To Live?
Mathew H Moody Harper Cody

We need water so that our blood can carry nutrients easier. We need water to stay healthy. Our bodies need 1-7 cups or mL of water. If you don’t drink enough water you will get dehydrated. When you are dehydrated it causes headaches, kidney damage and health problem. After three days without water you will suffer but you can survive 3 weeks. Tap water milk and fruit juice are the healthiest. It is better to drink purified water than lake water. Some brands of bottled water are bad for you. You can’t drink plain lake water because it could be polluted.

Can two people have the same personality?
Emily, Keely, Kiera, Lindsay and Marlene

It is not possible for people to have the same personality. People can be like you but not exactly the same as you. Your personality can not change, so you will have the same personality as you have now. In ancient times it was thought people could be divided in four personality groups: sanguine, choleric, melancholic and phlegmatic.

How does concrete hold things together?

Concrete is a building material used for lots of things such as buildings, houses and famous attractions. Cement is like glue. It bonds lots of materials together like brick and stone. Concrete mixed with sand works better because it holds things tighter. Cement is binder that combines other materials together. An early type of cement was made of lime sand and gravel.

How do they make Hockey Pucks?
Jorja Matthew P., Jumah, Tyson

The black rubber is made from natural rubber, antioxidants, bonding materials and other chemicals to balance hardness and resilience. The mixture is turned in machine.
Some of the types of pucks made are: NHL Ice Hockey pucks, custom hockey pucks, floor hockey pucks, roller hockey pucks, foam hockey pucks, chocolate hockey and pucks, super hockey pucks. The Hurley ball is the origin of pucks. It was cut on the top and bottom of the sphere. They were  removed for a better slide. 150 years ago pucks looked very different than today. And without hockey pucks people could not play Hockey .

How Do Storms Start
Peyton, Cody, James, Harper

When dry air and moist air meet, a tornado starts. The winds push at each other and start swirling. When warm air rises into the clouds and then the condensation falls back on the ground it rains or snows. When water evaporates and freezes it turns in to snow. When little chunks of ice in the clouds bump each other it makes lightning. When high wind surrounds a country it causes a hurricane

When plates under the ground move around they bump into each other and that causes an earthquake.

What Is The Meaning Of War?
Mason, Joshua, Matthew H.

Conflicts are carried on by the force of arms. Sometimes two countries compete and sometimes they work together. They fight with guns and other weapons. Some wars take years some take months. Solders wear gear such as helmets, vests, boots, and other bullet proof clothes. War is a battle to the death.

Reforming Education

This summer I have been hearing quite a bit about Tenure in education. It has been all over Twitter with those in the Twitterverse discussing it`s merit and demerits. As a Canadian I didn't pay much attention to it as I saw it as an American problem.  Famous people talking about how this will solve the educational problem. But with more and more tweets it became clear that it is a smokescreen. This got my attention and as an educator I decided I couldn't sit out this discussion.  And frankly it is a smokescreen. They are babbling about such an insignificant piece of the educational pie that I had to laugh. As if teacher tenure is going to solve the issues facing education. It is not even close to touching the base of the problem.

Education lives in a world where everyone thinks they know what is going on and what the problems are. And they blame teachers. With that simple fact, they blame teachers lies the heart of the issue. How do you expect your children and teachers to work in a positive environment when they are constantly bombarded with how  horrible education is, how it is in a state of decay, how it is not measuring up. School is a hostile place because of the negativity it is given through the press and by famous people who care but have not the time to root out the basic problem. They are part of the problem. Lighten up people. There are as many as 95% and possibly higher of the teachers out there who are doing a terrific job. Give them support and encouragement and that number would climb.

No people there are some serious issues around education. Studies show that home life has a direct influence on how students learn. If a child is not getting enough sleep they cannot focus in class. If there is fighting, arguing, hostility in the home it creates a negative atmosphere which affects how students learn. If there is not enough food in the home or not enough of the right foods it can affect students learning. This comes down to two main issues: poverty and knowledge about childhood development.

Poverty is an age old issue. People have been poor since the beginning of time. We all know the stereotypes. We all have said it is someone else`s problem. Really it is not. It stares teachers in the face everyday. It stares your children in the face everyday. There are students in every public  school anywhere in the world who come from an impoverished home. Time to face it. Some of the children who are your child's friends are poor. The best toys they may ever play with are in your house. Some of the best meals they may eat this week are in your house. Some of the warmest environments they come into contact with are in your house. We don't want to acknowledge it but that is the truth. But why is this? What is it about their homes that cause this to be true. There are many disfunctional homes out there. Why? Poverty, a lack of a sense of fulfillment, a low self esteem because of the economic situation, all have an affect.  I wonder how many self sustaining jobs a billion dollars could create? I wonder if we went to poor neighbourhoods and created jobs specific to their neighbourhood how much their spirits would be lifted and success be felt? I wonder how many children would be lifted to do better things and create a better life. I wonder if all the do gooders out there put their minds together they could solve this problem. People tell me it is complicated, that there are no easy solutions. My answer is we have to start somewhere. Building self esteem works wonders.

Childhood development is one of the most misunderstood terms in the history of man. Everyone has their own perspective on it and are even partially right in how they look at it. But do they realize their words have a great affect on a child? One word negatively can cause a divide. Children carry these things with them day in and day out creating a mental stress. It is tough to get out of that frame of mind. When they get to school they still carry it. In the middle of that Math lesson they are thinking “Why did that happen?” They lost the days teaching and missed the concept. We need to create positive home lives for children. We need to create an environment in the home where they feel loved and trusted and that they can succeed. We need to start feeding them the right foods so their bodies and minds  can develop to their potential. Ban anything that is not from a garden. Yes eating their veggies is good for them. They won’t eat it? They won’t starve. It goes against human nature. With nothing but healthy food in the house they will learn to eat healthily.

It is time to start talking about the real issues facing education. Solving the poverty issue and promoting healthy childhood development is where we need to start. Then we can look into the classrooms and start improving in that direction. Because without solving the poverty and promoting healthy childhood development education will not improve one iota from where it is now. It has to start with the children.

I challenge Bill Gates, Campbell Brown and all the other people who care about education to help solve these issues for all our children, every last one of them. I know we can do it.
